Tropical Tales : No. 8 - Vol. 1
- In Memory of Christopher Reeve - 1952 -
2004
As an actor, I am
saddened at the passing of "Superman,"
Christopher Reeve. As a person, I will miss his
inspiration of surpassing fate's cruelty; and as
a dancer, I cannot imagine a crueler pain than
having to spend one's life in a wheelchair. I
could not do that! It was this empathy that
prompted me to leave in my Last Will and
Testament all my money to the Miami Project to
Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami School
of Medical Research, Marc Buoniconti Spinal
Research Foundation, which is currently doing
stem cell research. I knew Marc's father, Nick
Buoniconti (Hall of Fame) from the Miami Dolphins
when we were all single in Miami, and sports was
our lifeline. I am asking, in Christopher
Reeve's name, for financial contributions to
this very worthwhile cause to be sent to the
University of Miami. My brother graduated from
The University of Miami School of Medicine, and
since this is his alma mater, I am sure he will
endorse my request.
Chris refused to let a disability determine
how he lived his life. We must find a cure for
paralysis. There are many nameless heroes out
there who do extraordinary things and get by
life the best way they can. Those who struggle
on a daily basis with physical impairments are
an influence on my life. We who are stronger owe
it to them to help them in whichever way our
talents lead.
Reeve's advocacy for stem cell research
emerged as a major campaign issue between
President Bush and John Kerry. I receive
bulletins from Governor Jeb Bush's office every
week, but there are times when we must take a
stand; and this is one of them.
President Bush, please reconsider your
position on government funding for stem cell
research. Would you change your mind if one of
your family member's was in such a terrible
dilemma?
As I said, I can't imagine in my darkest
moments being paralyzed and watching the world
go by, seeing people swimming, dancing, playing
football, and yes, riding horses. How dare
anybody complain about trivia! Count your
blessings! What is that quote? ...I complained
about my new shoes being too tight until I saw a
man with only one leg....
We artists owe the less fortunate our
support, and those in the medical profession our
deepest respect. Let's help them get the tools
they need to conquer paralysis.
